Nurses, serving on the healthcare frontlines, are uniquely positioned to identify and intervene in cases of suicidal ideation among patients. This vital role, however, comes with its own challenges and stresses, which unfortunately places nurses at an increased risk of suicide. Learning more about suicide is important for nurses, not just because of patient care, but also for the nurses’ wellbeing. In this course, participants will delve into a comprehensive discussion of the various risk factors associated with suicide, with a special focus on chronic toxic stress—a burdensome reality that pervades the lives of both patients and healthcare professionals. The curriculum underscores the importance of a systematic and coordinated approach to suicide prevention that encompasses various care settings. It also addresses the intricate legal and ethical considerations surrounding suicide, providing critical guidance in navigating these complex situations. Amidst rising suicide rates, this course aims to enhance the abilities and awareness of nurses, promoting a culture of safety, early detection, and optimal care, while simultaneously acknowledging and addressing their own vulnerability to this pervasive public health issue. This course satisfies the 2-hour continuing education requirement for suicide prevention in both the general and nursing populations, as mandated by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

Patricia Dunn DNP, APRN, FNP-BC is a Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Nurse and 20 years as a Registered Nurse. She has served as an APRN for Florida Pain Institute, Heart Rhythm Associates of Brevard, House Calls of Central Florida. She earned her Doctorate of Nursing Practice from Walden University, Minneapolis.
