Lyme is Ticking: Updates on the Management of Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Infections

About this course
The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) recently published new guidelines on managing Lyme disease in 2021, the first time these guidelines have been updated since 2006. As such, there are several updates and knowledge gaps that healthcare professionals should be aware of to properly manage and prevent tick-borne infections that are rapidly increasing in the United States. This activity reviews the epidemiology of various ticks and tick-borne infections, including Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis, Powassan virus, Borrelia miyamotoi disease, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment will also be described, along with the updated Lyme Disease guidelines released by the IDSA.

Instructors
Wesley D. Kufel is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Binghamton, NY, where he delivers infectious diseases (ID) education to pharmacy students. He is also a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in ID at SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY, where he provides clinical services for the ID consultation teams. He serves as a preceptor and educator for pharmacy students, PGY1 pharmacy residents, PGY2 ID residents, medical trainees, and ID fellows. He also serves as the Residency Program Coordinator for the PGY2 ID residency program and co-director of the Residency Research Certificate Program. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine Division of ID at SUNY upstate Medical University In Syracuse, NY.
